Jazz Orchestra -
The Shades Mountain Jazz Orchestra is a 20-piece Big Band style orchestra which specializes in playing popular standards of the 30's, 40's and 50's for special occasions and events. A subset of the Shades Mountain Baptist Church orchestra, the SMJO is composed entirely of volunteer instrumentalists who dedicate their gifts to expanding the ministries of the church into the greater Birmingham community and beyond.
The SMJO features a solid rhythm section and richly blended brass section of trumpets, trombones and saxophones. They also have a big-band style vocalist. The SMJO repertoire includes a mixture of exciting swing rhythms and nostalgic ballads from the famous classic bands of the World War II era as well as arrangements from the most exciting Jazz composers in American music.
