Student Music Ministry Handbook
For information on how to get involved, email Mark Sims, Minister of Student Music & the Arts.
New Wind Choir is a group of 100 high school students from the Birmingham, AL area that spend time investing in communities around the United States. Throughout the year, New Wind Choir performs in the Birmingham area in different venues from church to retirement homes and homeless shelters. Every summer New Wind Choir takes an eight-day tour of an area of the country (away from home) to make a difference for God’s Kingdom.
The group spends time not only singing and dancing to entertain, but also they complete projects on a regular basis that serves to meet the needs of various communities. New Wind Choir spends time with retirees in retirement homes playing board games and serves meals at homeless shelters. They paint park benches and renovate churches and homes. The tasks they complete have aided the efforts of firefighters in Wisconsin, community workers in north Georgia, and have assisted in meeting the spiritual needs of children and adults alike in West, Texas.

These high school students make a difference. It’s not just a choir, it’s a group committed to something greater than them. They know whom they work for: God. God is at the very center of everything New Wind is about.
Imagine a choir that is about more than just singing. Imagine a bunch of teenagers that is about more than just watching television. Imagine a movement of committed people who serve a God infinitely able to meet our needs. This is New Wind Choir.
We exist for making much out of God. We are not interested in the glib sayings of an overbearing Christian pop culture in the Southern United States, but we are very interested in the God we serve. Why?
Why would kids care about God, why would kids be moved to action? This world is so big, so confusing, so evil, so messed up. The universe is so very impersonal and uncompromising to the whims of mere mortals- so why would a God take interest in people when there are much greater things to capture the interest of its Creator than us.
Yet this is the very point where God intervenes and extends His love to a needy creation. God takes notice of our pitiful condition and (through the death of God’s son) He makes a way for relationship between Creator and creation to be re-established. And this belief in God guides everything that New Wind does.
New Wind Choir seeks to bring a new wind to people wherever they go by sharing the really awesome news that God cares, he has not forgotten you.
Put simply, God has captured the hearts and attention of students in Birmingham, AL to make a nationwide impact. We’re praying that God gets your attention- He really is awesome!
