Our History -

SMBC has a rich tradition of ministry in Birmingham.

In 1998, Gregg Morrison was asked by the Strategic Planning Committee to write a brief history of the church, which is presented here.

His work is dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Ila Walker Chronister, longtime church historian and the wife of SMBC's first deacon, Ernest A. Walker.

From its very inception in 1911, Shades Mountain Baptist Church has been a church focused on the Bible: Bible teaching, biblical worship and expository preaching. She's also been a church that has loved her pastor. These two characteristics plus an extraordinary commitment to missions and evangelism have allowed Shades Mountain to be a "light on a hill" in more ways than one. Not perfect by any means (for no churches are), but perfectly committed to the lordship of Christ and to the Word, Shades Mountain's greatest days may still be yet to come.
