2008 Mission Projects
Water Bottle Distribution – Homewood, AL Saturday’s – All Year
This ongoing mission project is perfect for Sunday School classes and small groups. Hand out water bottles with information about SMBC to people using the Lakeshore running trail and at the Homewood soccer fields.

St. Croix – U.S. Virgin Islands Jan. 18-26
This project is being led by the SMBC Men’s Businessman’s Sunday School class and will work with 2007 GIC missionary Ed & Debbie Cullen. Activities include light construction and landscaping, helping prepare and serve meals for the homeless, and helping with music and devotionals during community outreach events.

Middle East Feb. 5-18
This project is a vision trip designed to allow the participants to explore business and ministry opportunities in this region. Our hope is that foundations will be established through this project that we can build upon with future teams.

Cuba Feb. 20-26
God is doing great things in Cuba. Can believers freely exercise their faith? Are they free to assemble and to evangelize? Are they growing? Are new churches being established? The answer to all of these is a resounding yes and we have the chance to be a part of this incredible work! This team will gain a vision for this nation, breaking down barriers of understanding, encouraging local believers and, most significantly, praying to the Lord of the harvest.

First Love Choir Tour – Tennessee Mar. 14-18
This junior high choir team will be working with Jay & Chantell Watson and Life Community Church. Activities include performing daily at a variety of venues as they share the love of Christ through music and dance and work on several community service projects.

This high school team is open to juniors and seniors who have previously participated on the Mexico Mission Project. Activities include children’s programs, ministry to native Panamanians, and beach ministry to national vacationers.

University Ministry – New York Mar. 15-22
City Uprising is a unique opportunity for God’s people to unite in New York City. It is a movement born out of the Gallery Church of Manhattan to propel the local church and prosper the city. Through an intensive four-day worship and service experience City Uprising hopes to inspire resolute commitment to the local church, raise awareness of the need to reach the world’s major cities with the Gospel through new churches, and build a bridge into the heart of New York City through love and service. Work includes citywide HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, an artistic initiative raising funds for freshwater wells in Africa, and urban tutoring in NYC high schools.

Chinese VBS, Shocco Springs – Alabama DATE CHANGE April 4-6
This team will help facilitate a three-day Vacation Bible School camp and teach Chinese children from all over the Southeast about the love of Jesus Christ. This is a great opportunity to help reach China for Christ right here in Alabama.

Birmingham, AL April 5, 12, 19, & 26
This church-wide mission project will focus on doing inside painting at local elementary, middle, and high schools. The project will take place over the 4 Saturdays in April, and will conclude with a block party/open house utilizing the Student Choirs on April 26. Sunday School classes will have the opportunity to sign up for work at one of the schools. The SMBC Women’s Ministry will coordinate lunch each Saturday.

Jordan May 8-18
This team will work in partnership with many other churches from around the Southeast as we help renovate a camp and conference facility. Activities include light construction and clean-up, painting, and groundskeeping clean-up and beautification. No prior construction experience is required. This project will also include 3 full days of touring the Holy Land. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to not only serve but also experience the people and land of Jordan and Israel!

This team will work with a Russian Baptist church we are partnering with to help plant a new church in an unreached region of southwestern Russia. Activities will include ministering to children and teenagers at a local orphanage, much like a week of Vacation Bible School here in the United States. Sports evangelism and one-on-one discipleship will also take place. This is a great opportunity to help a new church plant reach out and grow!

This medical and church planting mission team will work with E3 Ministries on this Go to Grow Mission Project. The team will be working on two fronts: first, there will be daily medical clinics meeting basic physical needs by treating hundreds of patients per day; and second, there will be daily door-to-door evangelism ministry and sharing of the love of Jesus Christ, along with discipleship follow-up. The goal of this mission project is to glorify God by partnering with local churches to help them plant new churches by doing evangelism and discipleship in neighborhoods without churches.

This team of sixth graders and leaders will serve in a variety of ministries, including conducting a children’s day camp, working on several community service projects, and helping with a community-wide project.

This team will work with A Place Called Hope, a new church plant in Lethbridge that is part of our 2010 Vision. Ministry activities for this mission project include: park ministry including games and activities for children, teenagers, and adults; coffee house ministry; getting-to-know-you ministry events; and visiting local points of interest where Canadians gather socially with the goal of developing friendships.

This mission project is SMBC’s first to Minnesota. Activities include helping lead worship at a local church, offering outdoor concerts for people attending the Minnesota State Fair and the Republican National Convention, and helping host a Fun Run, a health expo, and family-based ministry events.

South Africa Aug. 29 – Sept. 6
This team will work with GIC missionary Pastor John Thomas and Living Hope Community Centre in Cape Town in helping to minister to those impacted by the AIDS pandemic in Africa,. Living Hope is a project with three objectives: one, to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ in a life changing way and to encourage people to follow Christ; two, to play a vital role in the prevention, care and treatment of HIV/AIDS; and three, to undertake community development through educational and health related programs. Come be a part of this exciting lead project that will lay the groundwork for future involvement.
