I. Avoid the two "Do Not's" (v. 19-20)

A. Do not quench the Spirit (v. 19)

"Quench" — put out a flame, a lamp. To smother.

Spirit Quenchers:
1. Divisive spirit/critical attitude (Ephesians 4:29-32)
2. Stagnant thinking (Mark 6:3-6)

B. Do not treat prophecy with contempt (v. 20)

II. Analyze everything according to God's Word (v. 21-22)

A. Examination (v. 21a)
"Test" — prove; testing of metals.
B. Application (v. 21b-22)

1. Hold on to the good
2. Avoid evil
