ROMANS 6:23

Monday Night Bible Study – June 30, 2008

 

"For the wages of sin is death,
but the gift of God
is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans 6:23

1.   “For the wages of sin is death”

 

·         “wages” = “earnings, payment” (think working a job and earning pay)

·         “death” = physical and spiritual death

·         Physical death first entered the world through Adam and Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden.

·         Spiritual death is separation from God for all of eternity in hell.

·         Key Concept = EARNED

 

2.   “but the gift of God is eternal life”

 

·         “gift” = something given to a person freely (think Christmas or birthday)

·         “eternal life” = present and future

·         Present = we once again have a right relationship (right standing) with God

·         Future = we have the promise of spending eternity with God in heaven.

·         Key Concept = UNDESERVED

 

3.   “in Christ Jesus our Lord”

 

·         This gift of eternal life was provided to mankind in Jesus Christ.

·         We did nothing to deserve or earn God’s gift of eternal life – Jesus Christ gave and provided for us this gift of eternal life.
