“parakletos” – called alongside to help
II. The Purpose of the Holy Spirit (vs. 8-15)
A. In Relation to the World (vs. 8-11)
“convict”
- Pronounce a judicial verdict by which the guilt is defined and fixed
- “Expose” sin which leads to conviction and judgment
John 3:20, “For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.”
1. Convicts of sin (vs. 9)
The essence of sin is unbelief in Jesus’ message and mission
2. Convicts of righteousness (vs. 10)
The Holy Spirit enforces the absolute standard of God’s character
3. Convicts of judgment (vs. 11)
The ruler of this world (Satan) stands condemned.
Revelation 20:10, “and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
B. In Relation to Believers (vs. 12-13)
1. There is a progression in the unfolding of truth (vs. 12)
My capacity to receive truth is enlarged in proportion to my obedience to the truth.
I Corinthians 3:2-3, “I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?”
Hebrews 5:14, “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”
2. He guides us through unfamiliar territory and into new frontiers (vs. 13)
C. In Relation to Jesus (vs. 14-15)
His chief purpose is to magnify and glorify the person of Jesus
