Love in Action

"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you took me in....Do it unto the least of these, and you will do it unto me." (Matthew 25: 35, 40)

What is Love in Action?

Love in Action is a charitable program set up by several area churches, to serve the needs of church and community members who have fallen into financial difficulties.

Our main focus is to provide a food and clothing bank for participants. Each church screens applicants for participation, and contributes financially to the mission of Love in Action.

Each Thanksgiving and Christmas season, Love in Action Ministries distribute turkeys, hams, and all the "fixings" for a complete holiday dinner. Donations of food and/or money to this aspect of the ministry are gratefully accepted, as are all donation to Love in Action.

How can I help?

Member churches and private donors contribute each month to the mission. Food is purchased each month from United Way Community Food Bank and the Christian Service Mission. If additional funds are available, fresh produce is purchased from the Farmer's Market.

Clean, usable clothing is also collected through member churches and private donations.

Who Runs Love in Action?

Each contracting church has a director who serves on the Love in Action Board. This is a voluntary position and the directors receive no compensation for their efforts. The function of directors is to coordinate volunteer workers and ensure that needs are being met. Those needing assistance may request help by contacting participating churches, a church member, or a Love in Action Director. All participants must be referred to Love in Action by a contributing church or church member.

When is the Food and Clothing Bank Open?

  • The 2nd Tuesday of each month, from 9:00-11:00 a.m.
  • The Saturday following the 2nd Tuesday, from 9:00-10:0 a.m.

Each participating family receives groceries on this day. The amount received is determined by the number of people in the household. Currently, the Food Bank serves approximately 85 families, or 250 people a month. Participants served by Love in Action do not pay for items they receive. All food and and clothing is provided by and paid for through donations from member churches and private individuals.

Volunteer

Love in Action is staffed by volunteers from contributing churches. Many who receive assistance also volunteer on food days.

The Friday before the 2nd Tuesday of each month is a work day for stocking pantry shelves. Workers are needed for both stocking and distribution days.

The Love in Action office is located in Northern Shelby County, on Commerce Boulevard, approximately four miles south of the Galleria, on Highway 31.
